2007 Spaetburgunder Beerenauslese a nice treat for the Festive Season
November 24, 2014
This was our third visit to The East Christchurch Sport & Social Club to make 14 people very happy with our wine tasting. We had a fine selection of cheese, Old Winchester, Beechwood & Barkham from Just add Grapes in Newbury, perfect partners for the wines. Thank you Gregg!
The evening began with Klohr's Secco, a semi sparkling Riesling and everybody started to smile. The talking started when we introduced Klohr's Pinot Grigio, "fruity with a lovely zing" and typical comments were, how unusual, totally different, lovely!
Next up was Weinbiet's award winning 2012 Pinot Gris Bassler Edition, a full bodied white with a long finish, full of flavours from melon, honey, raisins to a touch of vanilla, and helped the evening become even more enjoyable.
The reds added a different flair to the evening. Opinions + points of views were openly discussed; and one of the questions asked: "Are red wines very popular in Germany?" ...Yes, they are. The percentage of wine making is 60% white + 40% red, but Germany produces only 28% of their annual wine consumption.
Next Leiner's Dornfelder + Dunkelfelder were highly praised, colour, nose, palate .. excellent. Hensel's St. Laurent + Cuveé Red created more positive discussions + finished off the formal tasting.
We thought a lovely night must be finished with a difference. So, glasses were cleaned for a final treat, Spaetburgunder Beerenauslese Blanc de Noir, fruity + savoury. This dessert wine was harvested on 17th December 2007; perfect to finish a Christmas dinner and to finish another great evening.
Thank you to all! We look forward to coming back in Spring 2015.
